The carbon dioxide extinguishing system is most commonly used fixed system to extinguish fire by smothering action. It is a most effective system for protection for machinery spaces, pump rooms, electrical rooms, paint stores and cargo holds mainly for Container Vessels – Bulk Carriers – Multi-Purpose Vessels, Oil-Product / Chemical Tankers/ LNG-LPG gas tankers, Passenger / Cruise Vessels, Navy Vessels and Supply Vessels and tugs. High-pressure systems are recommended for smaller hazards or where space is limited.
The system consisting of a mobile supply of carbon dioxide, designed to be quickly moved into position and connected to a system of fixed piping, supplying fixed nozzles or hose lines or both that are designed for either total flooding or local application. Carbon dioxide is stored in pressure containers at ambient temperatures. At 70°f (21°c), the pressure in this type of storage is 850 psi (5860 kpa).
